The SOE community participated in a forest planting event
The Governance Coordination Centre (VKC) has brought together the community of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) for the fifth time to participate in the annual forest planting event. This tradition is not only a meaningful environmental initiative but also a community-building activity that strengthens connections among SOEs.
Participants began the day with a visit to the State Forest Enterprise (VMU) Panevėžys nursery, where a modern seed storage facility had been opened a few weeks earlier. Forestry specialists introduced participants to the preservation of Lithuania’s forest genetics, the process of growing seedlings, and modern forestry practices.
Representatives of various SOEs also had the opportunity to explore a newly installed automated seedling sorting line. Using artificial intelligence, the system photographs each seedling, evaluates its quality, categorises it, and prepares it for further processing and packaging.
Following the visit, participants travelled to the forest planting site in the Paežeriai forest district in the Panevėžys region. Together, they planted approximately 2,000 spruce and over 1,000 birch seedlings across an area of 1.2 hectares.
“The forest planting event is a meaningful tradition that brings our community together not only to talk about sustainability and responsibility to the state, but also to act collectively by contributing to the restoration of Lithuania’s forests. Planting trees symbolically reminds us that consistent actions create long-term results,” says Acting Head of VKC, Jurgita Bagdonienė.
VMU Director General Valdas Kaubrė emphasised that tree planting is a meaningful activity that unites people towards a shared goal – preserving and creating forests for future generations. “It is especially encouraging to see the SOE community actively participating in the forest planting event year after year, demonstrating a growing sense of environmental responsibility. Each year, by restoring and planting new forests, we strengthen the country’s green assets and continue a tradition that brings society together,” he noted.
This year’s National Forest Planting Day is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of President Valdas Adamkus. His contribution to environmental protection and the development of forestry in Lithuania is invaluable and inspiring, making this initiative a symbolic expression of gratitude for his leadership and a commitment to continue his work.
